What is Brandy?
Brandy made from Brandy wine was derived from the Dutch word branewijn which is “burnt wine” is a spirit that has been produced by distilling wine. Brandy generally contains between 35% - 60% alcohol and is typically drank as an after dinner drink.
There are 3 different types of Brandy. The term Brandy is usually Grape Brandy if the type is not specified.
Grape Brandy – This is produced by the distillation of fermented grapes.
Fruit Brandy – Fruit brandies are distilled from fruits other than grapes eg apples, peaches, apricot, cherries, plums, raspberries and blackberries. Fruit Brandy usually contains between 40% - 45% alcohol. It is usually served over ice and is colourless.
Pomace Brandy – is produced by fermentation and distillation of the grape skins, seeds and stems that remain after the grapes have been pressed to extract their juice.
