Balblair 18yr
Founded in 1790, Balblair Distillery is one of Scotland's historic Highland distilleries, located at Edderton in Ross-shire. Its location, traditional production methods and use of local water contribute to a distinctive house style known for bright fruit, citrus, spice and a rounded, full-bodied character. Rather than relying on chill filtration or added colouring, Balblair 18 Year Old is bottled at its natural colour and 46% ABV. Balblair 18 Year Old is initially matured in American oak ex-bourbon casks before being finished in first-fill Spanish oak butts. This combination brings together the fresh, orchard-fruit character associated with Balblair and richer notes of dried fruit, leather, spice and seasoned oak. The whisky is non-chill filtered, allowing it to retain more of its natural texture and character.
Colour: Deep golden amber with a warm, polished appearance.
Nose: Rich toffee and baked pear lead the way, followed by ripe apricot, vanilla and hints of new leather. With time in the glass, sweeter notes of dried fruit and gentle spice begin to emerge.
Palate: Smooth, rounded and generously flavoured, with juicy apricot, pear and vanilla custard at the centre. Seasoned oak adds structure, while the Spanish oak influence brings richer dried-fruit and spice notes. There is a pleasing combination of sweetness, warmth and gentle oak without the whisky becoming overly heavy.
Finish: Long and warming, with raisins, fresh spice, vanilla and lingering oak. A subtle leathery note remains towards the end, adding depth to an otherwise fruit-forward finish.
- Food Pairing : Although excellent served neat as an after-dinner dram, Balblair 18 Year Old also works beautifully alongside richer desserts and mature cheeses. Try it with sticky toffee pudding, crème brûlée, dark chocolate desserts, an aged cheddar or a nutty hard cheese. Its vanilla, dried-fruit and warming spice notes complement caramelised and nutty flavours particularly well, while the 46% ABV gives it enough weight to stand alongside richer foods.
