Ledaig 10yr Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Ledaig is the peated whisky expression produced at Tobermory Distillery, the only distillery on the Isle of Mull in Scotland's Inner Hebrides. The distillery dates back to 1798, and its island setting plays an important role in the character of its whiskies. Ledaig 10 Year Old is made using heavily peated malt, creating a distinctly maritime style that combines smoke and earthy peat with the freshness of the surrounding coast. The whisky is matured in oak casks and bottled at 46.3% ABV, without chill filtration or added colouring. The result is deliberately robust and characterful, with a combination of smoky peat, brine, citrus and sweet malt rather than the softer, unpeated profile associated with Tobermory's own single malt. The current Ledaig 10 is made using barley peated to approximately 30–40 ppm.
Colour: Bright golden amber with a natural, lightly hazy appearance.
Nose: Peat smoke and sea spray lead the way, followed by lemon, lime, brine and iodine. Underneath the smoke are sweeter notes of honey, vanilla, malt and toffee, with earthy hints of moss and damp stone adding depth.
Palate: Full-flavoured and gently oily, with a firm wave of smoky peat balanced by lemon citrus, salty brine and peppery spice. Sweet malt, honey and vanilla provide a softer counterpoint, while earthy and mineral notes give the whisky its distinctive coastal character. The smoke is assertive but remains supported by fruit and sweetness rather than becoming one-dimensional.
Finish: Long and smoky, with lingering peat, sea salt, black pepper and citrus alongside a gentle earthy bitterness. A touch of vanilla and sweet malt remains beneath the smoke.
- Food Pairing : The bold smoky character makes Ledaig 10 particularly well suited to smoked salmon, grilled steak, smoked or barbecued meats, mature cheddar and dark chocolate desserts. Its briny, citrus freshness works especially well with seafood, while the smoky peat complements grilled and charred flavours. For something richer, try it with blue cheese or dark chocolate, where the whisky's sweetness provides a useful counterpoint to stronger flavours.
- Drink before: Does not mature or improve in the bottle. Once opened, it remains best consumed within 1 to 2 years if the bottle is half-full, though an unopened bottle stored upright away from light and heat can last indefinitely.
